Since 1992, The Seminar School (TSS) has operated as an alternative learning option at Service High School. We serve 300-350 students as a multi-disciplinary school of language arts, social studies, math, and science devoted to fostering intellectually curious students who are ready to encounter the world's great thinkers with an open mind. TSS bases our teaching practice on the Socratic method.
The Socratic method engenders a cooperative dialogue where we evaluate and logically consider our own and others' ideas. Students inquire about philosophical, cultural, political, and historical ideas, give voice to their own opinions, and learn to listen respectfully and kindly to others. This allows our students to develop discipline in their habit of thought and to ask pertinent and meaningful questions.
We encourage our students to be passionate, reasonable, and self-reflective young men and women with the critical thinking skills necessary to pursue college or any other path.
The course offerings in The Seminar School are fully endorsed by the Anchorage School District and fulfill appropriate graduation requirements. Language Arts classes are mixed grades 9-12, and students have a different LA teacher every year. Social studies classes are by grade level with students taking classes in line with ASD course guidelines.
