Highland Academy is a 6th-12th grade competency-based learning environment, that promotes mastery learning across the curriculum. Students are placed at ability level in Language Arts and Math in order to meet specific needs. Teachers plan integrated projects in combination with traditional direct instruction approaches, using a variety of resources. Skills learned in one content area can often lead to standards met in another.
The school has a vibrant culture of respect for everyone, that can be felt the moment you walk in the door. Students become strong advocates for themselves and for others as they work through our Social-Emotional Learning standards.
All members of the learning community are committed to a Shared Vision, Shared Leadership, Personal Mastery and Continuous Improvement. Attention is placed on individual student learning needs through project-based learning that integrates technology as a key learning tool. Student voice and ownership is encouraged and expected as they are presented with a variety of ways to learn. Students are given multiple avenues for developing their leadership through formal and informal opportunities. Parents are encouraged to participate through continual monitoring of their child's progress, engaging with their child's academic advisor, joining the PTSO, and as members of the Academic Policy Committee.
We emphasize social-emotional learning, community-based and competencey-based learning, and growth mindset through our blended learning program. When students graduate from Highland, they are prepared for the next step, whether that's jumping into a career or preparing for college We have a strong advisory program that supports academic, social, and emotional growth. Students regularly present a reflection of their learning experiences throughout their time at Highland Academy.
